Jamia Students of Journalism Create Delhi News Web Portal

In a week long workshop with the reputed journalist Angela Phillips, students of M. A. Convergent Journalism ran a news website that looked critically at Delhi.

A week long workshop, from 20 to 25 April, at AJK-MCRC, JMI culminated in the creation of a news website called Delhi Gazette. The website was created and run by convergent journalism students who worked under Angela Phillips, a journalist from London who has worked with The Guardian for more than 30 years.

Delhi GazetteIn the news stories that were done for the website, the young journalists covered society, culture, education and environment. With stories about drug abuse amongst children, drones being used by Delhi Police and thesis projects being sold for money, the students not only reported events but also looked critically at the society and raised important questions.

“It was a great experience to run the website under a reputed editor and function as a real time newsroom for a week. This acts a capstone for our portfolios and gave us rigorous training on the field. It would be great if we can keep this running and invite people to write for it,” said Shadab Nazmi, one of the students.

The students were divided into groups and took turns between reporting and editing on the desk. The students ran news stories and used social media extensively to push these stories into the mainstream media.  Some of the news stories were also picked up by East London Lines, which is also an online news portal functioning from Goldsmiths, London. East London Lines tweeted the stories under the tag ‘ELL does to Delhi.’
