Save Sparrows campaign by Jamia students from 13-20 March 2015

Students Run Week-long Save Sparrows Campaign at Jamia

All that a House Sparrow needs today is a house to live in. The State Bird of Delhi is endangered given to the harmful cellular tower radiations, chemical gardening, unleaded petrol and lack of food (insects) and modernized architecture.

To give voice to this dwindling bird population, students of M.A. Development Communication, AJK MCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia initiated a ‘Save Sparrows Campaign’ in close association with Mr. Dilwar – also known as the ‘Sparrow Man’ (owner of Nature Forever Society: http://www.natureforever.org/). The initiative was taken under the guidance of Mr. Dharam Arora, the teaching faculty of Social Marketing and Media Advocacy.

The campaign started in February. It was Valentine’s Week. So, the students wrote love letters on hand-made postcards with a stamp of House Sparrows to express their love for this bird. This activity got featured on Nature Forever Society’s Facebook Page.

Students celebrated ‘Sparrow Week’ (13th February-20thMarch, 2015) by organizing various awareness events like Sparrow Thon and Sparrow March to create a buzz about the endangerment of sparrows and economical steps we can take to protect them.

On Wednesday, students performed a Freeze Mob at New Friends Colony which garnered positive response.

On Friday, March 20th , World’s Sparrow Day was celebrated in AJK MCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia by organizing a tree plantation drive supported by Mr. Parivartan (also known as ‘Peepal Baba’) the owner of an NGO – Give Me Trees Trust, Mayur Vihar, Delhi. A group discussion was also held in the campus on the topic – “Is Modernization and Technology Killing Sparrows?” moderated by Mr. Parivartan and Mr. Bisht (owner of NGO – Dharti Ma Trust).
