Jamia Wins S.A. Rahim Inter-Varsity Football Tournament

On Thursday, March 14th, Jamia Millia Islamia won the S.A. Rahim Inter-Varsity Football Tournament at the Jamia Sports Complex (Bhopal Ground) by scoring four goals against the opposing team, ASC, Bihar in the final match. About 30 teams are alleged to have participated in the tournament.

Jamia’s stricker Ajay Bartwal scored the first two goals in the first-half, and then in the second-half, Noaman scored the third goal, while the fourth goal was scored with a penalty shot by Navya.

Jamia’s team dominated the entire game from start to the end. The opposing team got very few opportunities to score a goal.

Mr. Sandeep Dikshit, Member of Lok Sabha, was supposed to be the Chief Guest for the event, however, he was a no-show.

The trophy for the tournament was given away by Mr. Salim Ansari, Member of Rajya Sabha.

The tournament is played in memory of legendary football coach S.A. Rahim, who served as the coach for the India national team from 1950-62.

Late S.A. Rahim was born on August 17, 1909. He was the greatest player of Hyderabad from nineteen twenties to early forties. He served as National Referee at Kolkata and other places in India, Colombo, Sri Lanka apart from refereeing at Hyderabad. He produced more than one dozen FIFA Referees and dozens of National Referees. India won various Gold Medals on National and international levels during the period of his services as Coach to the Football Team. India won 1951 and 1962 Asian games Gold Medal under his able guidance apart from earning other laurels. He retired as Principal of a High School and had been associated with Football from 1943 till his death on June 11, 1963.

It is worth noting, that this is Jamia’s second tournament win this year. Jamia Millia Islamia ended Zakir Husain Delhi College’s seven-year reign with a 3-2 win, via penalties, in the final of the 25th Zakir Husain memorial football tournament last month, February, 2013.
