Three-Day Gulf Studies Seminar Starting on Jan. 29

The Gulf Studies Programme, India Arab Cultural Centre,  Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize a three-day Gulf Studies Seminar from 29-31 January, 2013.

The seminar is designed to address some of the key issues which are very relevant to a nuanced understanding of the region. With the hope of impelling a more diverse understanding of the Gulf, its history, society, politics and international setting, this seminar seeks to adopt multi-disciplinary vantage points and bring together scholars with diverse spectrum of perspectives from across the world.

Another key objective of the seminar is to explore growing synergy between India and the Gulf States as both the regions share considerable symmetry in the perception of regional and global economic and political issues.

The Inaugural Session of the Seminar is scheduled to be held on January 29, 2013 at  11 AM in FTK-Centre for Information Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia.

The seminar will be formally inaugurated by Ambassador C.R. Gharekhan, Former Assistant Secretary General, the UN & Special Envoy of the Prime Minister for West Asia and Middle East Peace Process

Mr. Najeeb Jung, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia shall Chair the Inaugural Function of the Seminar.

Prof. Tim Niblock, Gulf Studies, University of Exeter will be the Keynote Speaker and he will be delivering a lecture on “Shift to the East? Gulf Responses to a Transformed Global Order and a Divisive Regional Environment”.

On this occasion, a Photo Exhibition called “Gulfscapes” will also be inaugurated in the Exhibition Hall, India Arab Cultural Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia. The inauguration will be held at 1 PM on 29th January 2013. The exhibition will be inaugurated by HE Sami Mohammad Al-Sulaiman, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait in India.

In the three-day seminar more than 25 papers are expected to be presented on the themes of the seminar by senior national-international faculty members, research scholars of various colleges/universities. The Conference includes six panels where papers will be presented, followed by Question & Answer Session for broad deliberations from different disciplines on the relevant topics. The topics of the Panels are:

i)  The Gulf and India in History

ii) State, Politics and Governance in the GCC States

iii)  Gulf in International Relations

iv)  Society, Gender and Culture

v) Regional Political Dynamics

vi) Contextualizing Indian Diaspora in the Gulf

The venue for the paper presentation is the Conference Hall of India Arab Culture Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia.

The Valedictory Session is scheduled to be held on January 31, 2013 at 4.30 PM which will be attended by Ms. Sara Akbar, Petroleum Studies Expert, Kuwait, Dr. Obaid Saeed Al-Shaqsee, Head, Department of Information, Sultan Qadoos University, Muscat among others.
