Series of Extension Lectures on Culture, Intellectuals and Nationalism on Nov. 16, 17 and Dec. 5

[Following is a Jamia press release dated November 15, 2012] 

The Centre for European and Latin American Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia is organizing a series of Extension Lectures on “Culture, Intellectuals and Nationalism”.

Under this Extension Lecture Series, the first lecture was organized on November 14, 2012 on “Theorising Nationalism: Herder to Benedict Anderson” by Ashley Tellis.

Following are the details of Extension Lectures to be held ahead at AV Hall-Centre for European & Latin American Studies, Nelson Mandela House, Jamia Millia Islamia:

About the Speakers: 

Ashley Tellis, PhD from Cambridge University, was a Rockefeller Residency Fellow at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He has taught at Universities in the US, UK and India and researches minority identity formation (Dalit, Adivasi, Northeastern, Muslim, Disabled, Homosexual, Sex Worker, Informal Labour, Kashmiri,Women) rights mainly through the lenses of Cultural Studies and Feminist Theory.

Archana Prasad has worked on biodiversity conservation and women’s issues and was a Fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. Most of her current research focuses on what kind of alternative can be visualised in the context of neo-liberal globalisation. Some of her major published work include Environmentalism and the Left (Leftword Books, 2004), Against Ecological Romanticism: Verrier Elwin and the Making of an Anti-Modern Tribal Identity (Three Essays Collective, 2003) and Tribals and Globalisation: Exploring the Potentional of Non- Timber Forest Produce in Central India (NMML, 2005).

Ravi Kumar, Associate Professor at South Asia University has taught Approaches to Indian Society ,  Material Culture, Critical Social Science, Pedagogy and Transformation, Contemporary Social Theory and his major researches include Ghettoisation and the Politics of Class in the City, Social Justice Agenda and Development of the Backward Castes, Education in the Times of Extremist Violence amongst others and has authored Ghetto and Within: Class, Identity, State and Political Mobilisation, Capital on Offensive: Neo-liberalism and Higher Education in India, Neoliberal Consensus and the Agenda for Schooling, Social Movements, Dissent and Transformative Action. He edits Radical Notes.
