The department of Hindi at Jamia held its third Devdas Gandhi Memorial Lecture titled, “Bhasha Aur Rachnatmak Avrodh,” which loosely translates to, lack of innovation in the Hindi language. It was held at the Nehru guest house on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010.

The guest speaker for the occasion was Rajendra Yadav, editor of the Hindi literary magazine, Hans. Hans was originally founded by the famous Hindi-Urdu writer, Munshi Premchand, in the 1930s.

Yadav spoke on the growing acceptance and use of the English language over Hindi. He also expressed his concern on the paucity of fresh and original work done by new Hindi writers and their minimal contribution to the body of existing Hindi literature. He, however, thanked the department of Hindi for its contribution and role in the development of Hindi literature.

He was accompanied on stage with Najeeb Jung, university vice-chancellor; Dr. Abdul Bismillah, head of the Hindi department; and Professor Asghar Wajahat, professor in the department of Hindi.
